The Center’s ongoing work on the National Biodiversity Information System (NBIS) has recently been featured on the front page of the Spring 2026 edition of Esri’s ArcNews periodical (and is available online).

The article explores the Center’s work with Esri and government partners around the world to develop the NBIS as a scalable, geospatial solution for nationwide biodiversity monitoring and data management. In it, we highlight the ability of the system to integrate biodiversity and ecological data from both Map of Life and the various collaborating government agencies, NGOs, and other institutions within a country to facilitate data interoperability and decision making while retaining sovereignty over private data. The platform and all its associated tools for data visualization, management, and analysis are powered by the Map of Life’s global data coverage and decades of research coupled with Esri’s technological infrastructure and capacities.
We were excited to highlight our partnership with Guyana, a highly biodiverse country that has made recent bold commitments to biodiversity monitoring and protection and is among a suite of early adopting countries. Following their launch of the National Biodiversity Monitoring Initiative at the Global Biodiversity Alliance Summit last summer, we have been closely working together to further develop a Guyanese NBIS customized to their needs.
We are grateful to the ArcNews team for the opportunity to share our NBIS work with the wider GIS community and honored to receive a front page slot!
