Biogeography and conservation of butterflies in Asia

Abstract

Islands have been called natural laboratories for the study of evolution, and the Indo-Australian Archipelago in Southeast Asia is the largest island chain on Earth.  David Lohman will present recent work on the biogeography and conservation of butterflies from this region, including studies on the adaptive radiation of Batesian mimics, geographic mosaics of host-parasite interactions, and the role of Buddhist monasteries as oases of biodiversity.

Bio

Dr. Lohman studies the ecology, evolution, and biogeography of insects in the Old World tropics.  He uses a combination of field ecology and molecular phylogenetic methods to investigate how interactions between insects and other organisms shape hyper-diverse communities in tropical forests.
