Systematics, phylogenetics, and diversification of Adenocalymma (Bignonieae, Bignoniaceae)
Abstract
Relatively little is still known about the evolutionary relationships of Neotropical organisms, and the factors that have shaped the diversity currently encountered in this region. However, it is clear that biotic interactions and abiotic aspects have played important roles for species diversification in the region. Integrated approaches using phylogenetic data are enabling biogeographic and evolutionary questions to be addressed. This project focuses on Adenocalymma, a genus of Bignoniaceae with ca. 75 species with diverse reproductive traits, and widely distributed through the Neotropics. This project aim to produce: (i) A robust phylogeny reconstructed with a combination of Sanger and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) data; (ii) An updated synopsis of Adenocalymma, including the proposal of an infra-generic classification; (iii) A monography for all species recognized in Adenocalymma; (iv) A detailed understanding of the biogeographic history and diversification of the genus.
