Improving the Forecast for Biodiversity in the Global Heat Age

Abstract

As global temperatures rise, models predict that as many as one in six species could become endangered. Yet, current models often do not incorporate the fundamental biological mechanisms that could mediate these risks. Biologists need to become better biodiversity forecasters and not just biodiversity explainers if we hope to protect the Earth’s species against the unprecedented dangers of climate change.

Bio

Dr. Urban is an Associate Professor at the University of Connecticut. His research group searches for creative answers to fundamental and applied questions in biology by integrating ecology, evolutionary biology, and genetics. He simultaneously develops novel mathematical theories, conducts intensely controlled laboratory experiments, performs experimental manipulations of entire ecosystems, and conducts intense field work.
