Biodiversity across space and time: Insights from trait-based ecology
Abstract
Trait-based ecology has recently been heralded as the key to pinpointing relevant mechanisms and thus making generalizable ecological predictions. To date, however, lack of knowledge regarding the responses of species organismal traits to environmental changes across spatiotemporal scales has hindered efforts to make trait-based ecology a predictive science. In my talk, I will discuss how expansive and growing repositories of species traits and their geographic distributions, often replicated across time, can help shed light on mechanisms underlying biodiversity dynamics across varied spatial and temporal scales.
