Species Protection Index (SPI) information provided by Map of Life has been incorporated into the 2021 United States Sustainable Development Report. The Report evaluates progress in achieving 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, and SPI informs Goal 14 – Life on Land: https://us-states.sdgindex.org/map/goals/SDG15. The index measures a region’s success in adequately representing species in its protected area network. SPI is calculated as average representation target achieved across assessed species, with region-endemic species weighted more strongly than wide-ranging species.
